Abstract

This paper examines the role of Brazilian school teachers in the career formation of the second generation immigrant high school students. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 4 teachers, 4 high school students, 5 high school graduates from 3 Brazilian schools in Japan. Brazilian school students used to return to Brazil after graduating from high school to enroll in higher education. However, in the past few years, the students’ perspectives on career has changed and more students are staying in Japan after graduating from high school. Reflecting this change, Brazilian school teachers developed the “Borderless Strategy” to widen the career choices of immigrant youth in Japan and even in a third country
